ABOUT ME
I have an intellectual disability and Down’s syndrome. I only have a few words, which includes ‘yes’ and ‘no’ and ‘stop.’ but I can make myself understood by gesturing. I am very shy and take a while to feel comfortable around new people. I get so shy I find it difficult to make eye contact with new people. Give me time to adjust to your presence before you gradually begin to direct more of your attention to me. I love it when someone new makes me a toasted cheese sandwich.

I have a cat called Rocky (I can say his name)

And I like to feed the neighbor’s cat, Emma.

NOISY PLACES, ESPECIALLY WITH BRIGHT LIGHTS

GETTING TOO HOT

AND ESPECIALLY BEING TOLD OVER AND OVER TO DO THINGS I DON’T WANT TO

IF I DON”T DO SOMETHING YOU HAVE ASKED ME A COUPLE OF TIMES TO DO (THAT YOU KNOW I USUSALLY DO) LEAVE ME ALONE AND ASK A WHILE LATER.

AND I CAN GET VERY ANGRY AND MELTDOWN IF MY IPAD RUNS OUT OF POWER. I WILL NOT UNDERTSAND THAT IT NEEDS TO BE RECHARGED.  I HAVE 2 IPADS SO ALWAYS MAKE SURE THE ONE I AM NOT USING IS CHARGING. HAND ME THE FULLY CHARGED ONE WHEN THE OTHER RUNS OUT OF POWER.

Occupational Therapist

I have completed a Sensory Profile with recommendations for Billy. Read my complete assessment by uploading Attachment 2, below. Understanding his sensory sensitivities is essential to supporting social and occupational participation. If he begins to experience sensory overload he will shut down and become resistant to participating in anything.

Speech Therapist

See how best to communicate with Billy and support his understanding by reading my communication assessment which you can download at the bottom of this page: Attachment 3. It has my contact details attached.

You can also view a video about how Billy communicates at the bottom of this page at Video 4.

Also, if Billy raises his hand like pictured below it is a sign to ‘back-off’, he is finding you overloading and can get distressed and dysregulated if you ignore this sign. Back off for a few minutes and let him calm then gently try communicating with him again.

Behaviour Support Practitioner

See Billy’s complete Behavior Support Plan at Attachment 5. Email me at [email protected] if you have any questions or would like to meet with me to discuss my plan and the fine points of how to implement.

Physiotherapist

Billy needs to work every day on his balance and coordination. Play ball games with him – especially catching and throwing. Start close and then move further away. Don’t let him fail too often. Use the weighted ball I have left in the office. You can see other exercises Billy enjoys doing by watching Video 2 – at the bottom of this page.

OTHER THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT ME

I HAVE EPILEPSY

red and white x logo

I ONLY EVER HAVE MAJOR SEIZURES WHICH ARE USUALLY FIRST THING IN THE MORNING AFTER IT HAS BEEN A HOT NIGHT.

My arms and legs will start shaking. Just leave me where I am but remove or move anything around me, I might hit. The seizure will usually last less than 30 seconds, but if it lasts for more than 60 seconds ring an ambulance.

See detailed instructions on how to manage my seizures, below.

THE OTHER THING IS I CAN GET DISTRACTED AND GET LOST EASILY. SOMETIMES I AM SO INTERESTED IN SOMETHING I FORGET TO KEEP AN EYE ON WHERE YOU ARE.

So always keep a close eye on me.
